Development Solutions Opportunities
Organizing student contracting for global development
Through a series of interviews with faculty members at Carnegie Mellon, DSO realized there was a major need to create an environment in which students could easily connect with peers and faculty to learn about opportunities and share expertise to cooperatively realize a community’s vision of development. As DSO explored the best way to facilitate a strong undergraduate community interested in solving development issues DSO observed that there was a lack of collaboration and organization even at the scale of one university. Interviews showed that there was a huge market for an organization with operational expertise that could bridge, inspire, and develop a growing global community.
Based on these discussions, DSO started developing a network at CMU. DSO developed a “Wishlist” a software application where students could apply for opportunities in the global development realm posted by faculty, NGOs, corporations, and organizations. DSO also initiated a series of mixers and lectures about global development issues to increase awareness and to provide a medium for people working on similar development areas to mingle. The average audience at these events is 75 people composed of professors, NGO and corporation representatives, graduates, and undergraduates.
